Birmingham Builder sited for OSHA Violations
As the need for builders in the southeast increases, and the expenses for getting new crews out to building sites, there will be more corners cut trying to save overhead and expenditures. OSHA will have to be extra vigilant to monitor the workplaces over the next couple of years.
Federal labor officials have proposed $131,200 in fines for River Framing of Calera and $11,400 for Lifescape Builders of Vestavia Hills for exposing workers to fall hazards from unsafe scaffolding.
“In the Southeast, lack of fall protection is a leading cause of injuries and deaths, particularly among Hispanic construction workers,” Robert Sanchez, Birmingham area director for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said in a Monday news release.
Rivera Framing was cited for seven repeat citations, with proposed penalties of $108,400, for failing to train employees to avoid fall hazards and provide workers eye protection when they use nail guns. OSHA proposed six additional serious citations, with proposed penalties of $22,800, for exposing employees to falls from defective scaffolds and damaged ladders.
Joe Rivera, former owner of Rivera Framing, said Monday he was unaware of the citation.
