Broward County Private Public Low Income Housing

As we have discussed before, one of the growth markets for builders in the coming years is the low end housing market. Broward County has embraced this with a new program that is designed to work with builders to develop properties for low income buyers.

This program puts new fresh homes in areas that are downtrodden, providing hope and a positive role model for the rest of the community. Too often, when neighborhoods lose hope that things will turn around, people fail to invest and maintain what is there. Once the hope returns, the community has the potential to turn around. This is how private-public partnerships can work, and provide building opportunities for development companies during economic downturns.

Broward County owns roughly 110 vacant lots and plans to release them to developers in batches of up to 20 at a time, providing free land in exchange for long-term price caps. The lots, many acquired after owners failed to pay taxes, are scattered throughout Roosevelt Gardens, Washington Park and other central neighborhoods where private-sector interest in redevelopment is growing.

County officials have said they would like to expand the program to include vacant lots with unpaid taxes within cities. via MiamiHerald.com
