It looks like the slot machine casino that will be built in downtown Pittsburgh will be a great opportunity for development in the downtown area. Harrahs is seen as the leading candidate, as they look to build “a casino complex on 12.3 acres east of the Fort Pitt Bridge, where the Chevrolet Amphitheater and its parking lots now sit. The project would also expand Station Square, including new ground-floor retail and sidewalk dining, and add 200 rooms to the nearly 400-room Sheraton Station Square Hotel.”
According to a study commissioned by Harrah’s and Forest City, their proposal would create more than 10,000 jobs.
Former Steelers running back Franco Harris is also a part of the Forest City/Harrah’s proposal. He will head a foundation through which Forest City and Harrah’s will donate more than a $1 million to a community with a 60-percent or higher minority population.
Other competitors for the Pittsburgh slots license are Isle of Capri Casinos Inc., which has promised to build a new $290 million arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of a $1 billion development in the city’s Hill District if it gets the license; Detroit casino operator Don Barden, and Alco Parking owner Merrill Stabile, who has partnered with former Mandalay Resort Group executives. via Pittsburgh Business Times

There is also a report out that Mario Lemieux and his group are selling the Pittsburgh Penguins. I doubt that the NHL would allow a casino group to own a sports franchise, but it could be enticing to a new owner knowing that a new Arena may be in the offering for the team and a large entertainment complex outside of the arena.
