Senator Shelby Hints at West Point Georgia Kia Plant

The rumors  circulating around the potential development of a new 2 billion dollar Kia Automotive Plant in Mid Western Georgia are getting heated. Alabama Senator Richard Shelby may  have let the cat out of the bag, or given us a hint that the  deal may be close.

In a town hall-style meeting in LaFayette Friday afternoon, U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Tuscaloosa) said that he’d heard rumors of a big investment that’s about to be made near the Georgia-Alabama line in the vicinity of West Point and Lanett.
“There’s a lot of rumors, and I hope it’s true,” he said. “If it happens, you need to take advantage of it.”
According to published reports, a site near West Point is being considered by Kia as the location for a new automobile assembly plant. It would appear to be an ideal spot, given its proximity to I-85 and the CSX Railroad main line.
Should the West Point site be picked, I-85 between West Point and Montgomery would become something of a “Korean car corridor,” with the Montgomery Hyundai plant forming one bookend and the Kia plant in West Point the other bookend. Any community between those two points along I-85 would have excellent chances to recruit parts suppliers the two plants will need. The Mando plant in Opelika is one example of such a supplier. via Valley Times-News Story.

There was a comment at topix.net that gave an idea of a potential site for the new Kia Plant.

Intersection of Webb Rd and Gabbetville Rd — between I-85 on the east and the railroad tracks on the west, all the way south to the back side of the West Point Industrial Park. Also back up on the north side of Webb Rd, about 3/4 of the way up to Gabbetville Circle. The property would supposedly displace 28 households. This is second-hand information, but it is from what is normally a very reliable source. via Topix Forum
