Sonny Perdue, Governor of Georgia, stood up and announced that he will fight for a Constitutional amendment to stop eminent domain legislation that could harm the citizens of Georgia. This is a great statement by the Republican Governor that politicians and developers will not be able to just take someone’s property for their own gains.
Gov. Sonny Perdue on Wednesday called for a state constitutional amendment to provide Georgia property owners with more protections from government seizure of their land.Perdue also announced a new bill reforming the state’s eminent domain laws in the wake of a widely criticized decision by the U.S. Supreme Court which appeared to give the government more power to take private land for redevelopment.Calling the issue of eminent domain “one of the most visceral” he’d come across in 15 years of elected office, Perdue said his two-pronged approach struck the proper balance between government and private property rights.”The government’s awesome power of eminent domain should be used sparingly and never be abused for private benefit,” Perdue said. The governor was surrounded by Republican lawmakers who must now push his plan through. via AP Wire
