The University of Maryland has created a group that will manage and develop research parks throughout the state. The federal government pays a great deal for university research and then the patents revert back to the universities themselves making research a very lucrative process for these institutions. That they are taking the research off campus and putting it as a private venture with managing the real estate end is interesting. “University research parks are an increasingly important part of the state of Maryland’s strategy to develop a technology-led economy, and the new association can help maximize the benefit of these parks,” said Brian Darmody, assistant vice president for research and economic development at the University of Maryland, College Park.

The University of Maryland, College Park on Thursday announced the launch of the new group, Research Parks Maryland. University officials believe it is the first statewide university research park group in the country.
The umbrella organization, which will be based at College Park, includes M Square, a 130-acre research park next to the College Park campus. It also will include research parks associated with Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Montgomery College. via Commercial - bizjournals.com.
