William E. Mendez, a mortgage broker from Lakewood, Colorado has been sentenced to 49 month is federal prison. He was convicted for applying for fraudulent mortgages for unqualified illegal aliens. This is something that will need to be broadcast far and wide because I think we are having an epidemic in fraudulent mortgage underwriting.
Maybe Raymond Amengual, a lender with AHM Mortgage, who we spotlighted complaining that his business is down should be thinking about making sure his house is in order.
Mendez was indicted, along with other members of his real estate firm, by a federal grand jury in Denver in September 2005. He pleaded guilty in March.
According to the plea agreement, between 2000 and 2002 Mendez helped prepare more than 100 fraudulent home loan applications for clients that he and his employees knew were “illegal aliens” or otherwise unqualified to receive home mortgages.
HUD insured the mortgage applications through the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). Mendez also paid loan officers to ensure that the applications would be approved, according to the plea agreement.
