Is the new song, “Where have all the brokers gone?”

Re_agentThat is the question posed by Dan Dorfman in the New York Sun today.

In effect, the end of the current real estate boom is also signaling the end of the seemingly nonstop national flight into the real estate brokerage business by those folks who figured such an entry was practically a guarantee of a lucrative six- or seven-figure annual income.

In the 1960s, there was a popular Peter, Paul & Mary song: “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” Don’t be surprised, judging from the weakening housing picture, if New Yorkers aren’t soon humming: “Where have all the brokers gone?”

There have been so many people that have gone into a career in real estate looking for the pot of gold over the past few years. But as my father said about stockbrokers, so should you think about Real Estate agents. “Anyone can be a good broker in a good market, but find on that is a good broker in a down market and you have found a great broker.”

Now will be the test for those selling homes and want to make it a long term career. Sell the home in a way that the buyer and seller are pleased as the market is in transition and you will have clients forever.

  1. I couldn’t agree more! In a good market it seems like every Joe and his uncle become real estate agents! It’s harder in my state to become a hairstylist (Thank God!) than it is to become a real estate practitioner…I sincerely hope standards are increased as the years roll by. Minimum standards in my belief would include issuance of a “apprentice” real estate license with certain minimum standards to be met by a certain time line. Also, to elevate from “salesperson” to “broker”, in my state one has to be affiliated with a broker for only a year.. That should be raised..

    Oh, well.. wishful thinking…
