Face it, if you are like me you are frustrated everytime you send money to inefficient governmental agencies when you pay taxes. For those who live in cities their tax bills are even higher as the cities tend to want their cut of your earning and asset pie.

Kiplinger came up with a survey of the cities that are the friendliest for paying taxes in, meaning they let you keep more of what you earn. For conversation sake, the median city tax level in the United States is 9.1 percent.

  1. Guess they don’t include property tax. Jacksonville is no longer a cheap place to live, IMO. I don’t know about the other places on the list, but elsewhere in the South, the cost of living seems much less than in Florida at present. Since the state government’s solutions all involve shifting the tax burden, rather than reducing the spending that shot up during the bubble, the pain is unlikely to go away. If the pain doesn’t go away, increasing numbers of residents will.

  2. I live in Houston and the tax rate has been 8.125% for over two decades.

  3. Actually, you are all not aware, but the lowest tax jurisdiction in the United States is an island chain called the Northern Mariana Islands. It became US soil officially in 1985. As part of their agreement, they had to mirror the US tax code. However, a loophole allowed for a rebate, which gives back up to 90% back on all CNMI sourced income. I love it here and highly recommend it. Feel free to take a look at my website. I do real estate here.

  4. Sorry to inform you about your geographic ignorance, but Anchorage is not in Alabama, it is in Alaska.

  5. Thanks Dale, I will blame fat fingers and a bad editor… :) It is fixed now.

  6. Wherever you are looking…Stay away from Mi. Taxes are extremely high.
