Buffalo Law Firm Evicting IRS and DEA From Guaranty Building

GuarantybuildingI have to give this law firm credit, the have brass cajones. 5 years after purchasing the Guaranty Building in Buffalo, New York, the law firm of Hodgson Russ LLP has decided to not renew the lease of the Internal Revenue Service and Drug Enforcement Administration. The leases were expiring in July and the agencies have not found new space to lease so are staying put.

Hodgson Russ LLP wants to complete their renovations and wants these agencies out so they have filed an eviction suit. You say that there will be no ill will, but at the same time, can you imagine  what their clients are saying. “Hey Hodgson, I found someone else to work with on this tax matter, you guys are not so popular over there anymore.”

Or, 6 associates at Hodgson Russ were arrested by the DEA on possession charges. Of course, this is satire, but I have never been one to trust the government that much to evict them.

The motion, filed by Hodgson Russ LLP and Guaranty Building Associates LLC in U.S. District Court, seeks to evict the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Internal Revenue Service. The leases for each agency are due to expire in July. Hodgson Russ bought the building, a National Historic Landmark, five years ago. When renovations are completed, officials from Hodgson Russ, the area’s largest law firm, say all space will be needed to house a staff of nearly 350.

“For over 18 months, we have worked cooperatively with the government as it looked for new space for its agencies,” said a statement from Gary Schober, president and CEO of the firm. via Business First of Buffalo.
