With the passing of Leona Helmsley this week, a true character in the world of real estate leaves the scene. While Donald Trump captures the paparazzi headlines these days, Leona captured them in the eighties. The former real estate agent who married mogul Harry Helmsley was a pure character. She is famously know still as the “Queen of Mean” after quotes arose during her tax fraud trials. But she was a fastidious businesswoman whose brusque manner overshadowed her attention to detail.
Even in death her attention to detail is making headlines. After a new public Mausoleum was built that blocked the view of Manhattan at their Woodlawn cemetery in the Bronx, Leona was livid. But instead of just fighting it, she built a million dollar crypt for herself, husband, and son in Sleepy Hollow.
And this crypt will always have a view of her and her husbands beloved Manhattan.
Leona may have been a tough woman in business and life, but her attention to detail is what made her a very successful one. RIP Leona Helmsley.
Leona Helmsley, for years the imperious head of a multi billion-dollar real estate and hotel empire, will spend eternity in a $1.4 million suburban mausoleum with a magnificent view, alongside her beloved husband, Harry.
Helmsley, often called the Queen of Mean, previously moved her husband’s remains there after becoming dissatisfied with his old neighborhood. “You know what they say: location, location, location,” said Philip Zeffirelli, mayor of Sleepy Hollow, the Westchester County town where Helmsley will be buried this week.
The ornate granite mausoleum is 1,300 square feet, with a dozen Doric columns and stained-glass windows re-creating the Manhattan skyline — including the Empire State Building, once the crown jewel of the Helmsley properties. via the charactering.com.
