It is great to see smart people do smart things.
The conversion of the old Schmidt Brewery in St. Paul, Minnesota into a live-work space for about 100 artists and developers was announced recently. Instead of forcing another industrial application into a community that has transitioned to a residential outpost in the city, the conversion of this historic building will create a positive impact.
As a home worker, I would have loved to live in this kind of space in my single days. The combination of creating housing that is built for people working from home while having stimulating neighbors sharing the same lifestyle is fantastic.
My hopes are that many communities will look at their older infrastructure and apply these same restoration concepts.
One of the intents of this project is to create vibrancy within the brewery but also have it spill onto West Seventh Street,” said Thune, who helped broker the agreement. “That’s going to be extremely good for West Seventh.”
The housing component will feature 95 apartments where artists and other creative professionals - architects, designers and writers - can create their work as well as live.
Artist housing, especially rentals, appears to be a going niche in St. Paul. The Carleton lofts opened with 169 apartments last November; one year later, it has a waiting list, said Mark Moorhouse, a Dominium partner.
And because artists will be working from their homes, they tend to be invested in the community rather than commuting to another city for their jobs, Moorhouse said. via TwinCities.com
For more information, Theresa Boardman covered the renewal of the Schmidt Brewery in a post last March before this announcement was made. Great for historical background.

Comment by Teresa Boardman on 2 November 2007:
Personally I am thrilled that it is being put back into use. The vacancy is creating a kind of black hole on West 7th street. This will help the shops in the area too.
