I agree, For those people who had watch that news really scare them. I understand that media just want to catch viewers attention - why not - it's really a big news! Media just report what they had covered when looking for a news. Anyway, at least they report positive and negatives giving as awareness on what's the real thing in our area.

I think it's great to hear the perspective of someone out there that doesn't spout doom and gloom like the media does everyday. There was also some more positive news about the real estate market last Thursday when the National Association of Realtors announced that pending home sales (properties under contract for sale) ROSE 5.3% in June (the last month for which data is available). This is AWESOME NEWS because Reuters surveyed a group of economists that predicted a 1% DECLINE! Did you hear anything about this in the media? Probably not.

Some are suggesting that the marketing is turning in large part from bottom feeders (Investors) and some savvy consumers. In addition they believe that the enhancements to the FHA program and the first-time home buyer credit added traction to this recovery. This may not be the bottom to this market yet however things are looking up.

Realist, you've got some points in about the article. Seeing as how anyone at NAR is probably a bit biased, they'd be the first to but a positive spin on the market, so perhaps they're not the BEST source to use.

But there's plenty of other sources to back up some of their claims/observations. And since much of NAR's "observations" are based on studies conducted - I think maybe their info lies somewhere between fact and observation.

Also, I'm sure you realize - the writer is NOT blaming the market on the media - simply pointing out the media's role in it. TO be honest, no matter how shitty the market is, people should try and keep as optimistic an attitude about it as possible - doing nothing but highlighting gloomy facts only scares people away from doing anything in real estate, which will NOT help the market recover.

One plus about this market? Now that it's tougher, at least all the "get rich quick without working hard" agents will be quitting the biz cuz they just can't cut it, leaving the market to the agents that deserve the business.

Your definition of "facts" is rather loose - pretty heavy on anecdotal observations and subjective terms. And classifying Lawrence Yun's economic forecast as "facts" is a disservice to your readers. After all, if his opinion was truly "fact", we wouldn't even be having this conversation today since he was expecting the housing market to rebound in 2008 as recently as June 2007.
The "media" isn't causing bank balance sheets to deteriorate to their worst positions in years. The "media" didn't create the events that caused hundreds of mortgage lenders to shut their doors -- the vast majority were caused by bond investors demanding that the lenders repurchase fraudulent originated and/or poorly underwritten loans that had first payment defaults (not exactly the sort of stuff you see discussed in the local rag)
What the media DID do was perpetuate the get-rich-quick mindset in the real estate industry, which is why we still have massive overcapacity of agents - including many agents that won't close a single side this year, why we still have unrealistic sellers who refuse to believe they aren't able to make the same profit as their neighbor might have a year or two ago, why we still have builders throwing up spec houses when they haven't moved their existing inventory in 18-24 months, etc., why we still have people who are stunned to discover that the can't do a cash-out refi five minutes after closing on a home purchase!
