Green Roofs Tac Abatement For New York – No Benefit For The Sheep

Surprised-sheepWhen I think of green roofs I think of the old sod homes on the prairies during the dust bowl. But with new technology and agronomics, there are real benefits to adding a green roof for commercial buildings.

New York state has recognized the benefits such as cutting down run off, reduced energy use, and long roof lives, and has offered a tax abatement of $4.50 for each square foot. For those in New York City that is about 50 percent off the cost of installation, but in the suburbs and the rest of the state it should cover most of the cost of installation.

While green projects for the sake of looking like an environmentalist do nothing for me, the combination of green and economically smart is a great combination.

But the tiny absorbent leaves and modest but hardy roots of the sedum — typically found in desert climates — are at the center of a growing effort to reduce greenhouse gases, rainwater runoff and electricity demand in New York.

This month, Gov. David A. Paterson approved tax abatements to developers and building owners who install green roofs, or a layer of vegetation and rock that absorbs rainwater, insulates buildings and extends the lives of roofs. Sedum, which soaks up water quickly and releases it slowly, is an ideal plant for the job. via NYTimes.com.
