Massachusetts Habitat For Humanity Forecloses On Home

Habitat_scamHabitat For Humanity has been a blessing for many families across the world. The combination of sweat equity and volunteers provide homes for those who previously had been unable to purchase a home.

But there are still the scam artists who take advantage of a communities good will. That seems to be the case of Tammy Berry who was given the opportunity to live in a Habitat home in Billerica, Massachusetts. Instead, she moved 12 miles away to Lowell with her husband and rented out the rooms in her Habitat for Humanity home.

Fortunately, Habitat for Humanity has the process in their mortgage agreement that the homeowner must live in the home. Instead of letting the person scam the efforts of the community, they are now foreclosing on the  property.

I would love to make the  Berry family write letters of apology to all those who donated their time and money to build the home. They are the victims here.

Over the years, Berry’s friends and other family members have actually been the people who called the Habitat house home. During the I-Team’s investigation, we found Tammy Berry, Habitat’s client, living with her husband 12 miles away in Lowell.

Not only did we find Berry living in a different house, we found a woman who says rooms at the house were once up for rent and a document backs those claims up. According to state records, Jessica D’Amico paid Berry monthly for room and board. “It’s just wrong what she does and she’s making a lot of money off people for something she was practically given.”

But the opportunity that was given is being taken away. After the I-Team’s report, Habitat filed for foreclosure. Some of the rules laid out in Berry’s mortgage have been broken.  via wbztv.com
