Housing Voucher Program For Homeless Veterans

Us_flagOn this Veterans Day it a great to remember them. Most come home to a stable life, but for others the world can get turned upside down. Since this is a real estate site, I wanted to bring a federal housing program to your attention that provides Section 8 Housing Supplements for vets.

Many real estate agents volunteer their time and probably come across Veterans that are having troubles or are even homeless. The Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program offers aid to the vets and their families. It is not widely known but can get through a great deal of red tape to put a roof over someones head.

If you know a Veteran having hard times in your travels, let them know of this program. It may make a big difference in their lives. Their service has made a big difference in ours.

The program isn’t new. The vouchers have been available nationally since the early ’90s. But the program has been dormant, explained Rhonda Rosenberg, a spokeswoman for the King County Housing Authority. Murray, on the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, used her clout to help bring these vouchers home.

“We know this works,” Rosenberg said. “Changes lives.”

What makes the program a lifeline is the way it combines housing with case management and support services. Homeless vets tend to suffer from myriad problems, including health issues, disabilities, addictions and financial hardship. Tailored social services help them maintain healthy lifestyles after finding them housing.

Under the subsidy, a veteran spends up to 40 percent of his or her income on rent and utilities. The voucher covers the rest.

Advocates say if more landlords or property owners knew about the program, they, too, could do their part to help the 2,500 to 3,000 vets who are homeless in King County alone. More than 400,000 veterans in America will experience homelessness at some point this year. via Seattle PI.

  1. This is some good information, I have to make sure some other people see this. That’s a cool program that’s set up for the vets.

    Thanks
