Home Lien Over 1 Penny Due On Utility Bill? Your Government in Action
It is bad enough that the city of Attleboro, Massachusetts has threatened to put a lien on a home over a one cent shortage. What makes it even worse is to whom they did this to.
A 74 Year Old Blind Woman.
Yep, because she was one penny short on a bill to the utility, the city is threatening her with legal action. Their excuse, the software program only see’s that a balance is owed, not the total of the balance.
To that I say, get stuffed. It can not be that hard to put a filter in for it to recognize that they should only send these letters out to those who owe a significant amount.
What these idiotic bureaucrats fail to remember is that letters scare the hell out of the bravest of us. The government is the only one who can send someone to our home with a gun to take our possessions legally. Everyone else goes to jail if they try this.
My local power company can shut my power off if I do not pay, but they can not threaten me with governmental powers.
So the local government of Attleboro, and all other governments, have a mandate to be more respectful to their citizens.
Instead they threaten blind ladies and blame it on the software. Yep, Debora Marcoccio, City Comptroller, I am talking to you. Your comment that “It would be fiscally irresponsible for me to have staff weed through the bills and pull out any below a certain amount,” is disturbing. Why not fix the program instead of threatening your citizens.
Dealing with reporters over your callous attitude and wasting tax payer money dealing with these things is what is fiscally irresponsible.
A 74-year-old blind woman has been told a lien will be put on her South Attleboro home if she doesn’t come up with a penny she owes on an outstanding utility bill.
Eileen Wilbur, of Glenn Street, said she discovered the notice of the potential lien after her daughter, Rose Brederson, came over to read her mail.
“It’s so upsetting,” Wilbur said. “It sent my blood pressure up so high.”
The city sent Wilbur a letter dated Nov. 10 stating that if the 1 cent balance is not paid by Dec. 10, the city will assess a lien of up to $48 on Wilbur’s next property tax bill. The Sun Chronicle Online
