Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities The Congressional Quarterly Press has released it’s most dangerous city list for 2008 and New Orleans has taken the lead. Last year Detroit was the leader of the pack, but now New Orleans is the most dangerous city.

Camden, New Jersey is second followed by Detroit, St. Louis, and Oakland. Camden had the lead in 2006 so they are climbing the charts again.

This isn’t completely accurate because major cities have good and bad suburbs. The suburbs are part of the major city, which changes the dangerous possibilites. What about L.A., gang capital of the world? Or miami, with over 80% Latinos. Or Dallas Texas, 36% white, other blacks and latinos.

I live in New Orleans and it is definately NOT the most dangerous city to live in. There are a few parts of the cities that have crime, but isnt that everywhere? There isn’t one place in the world where nothing bad can happen! Whose to say New Orleans has more crime the NYC? BACK OFF!!!!!!!!!

The whole world is crazy always was always will be life has been written there is no change. Its funny how you here big cities like new york, los angelos, Atlanta……….Talk about how dangerous they cities are when any smart person can get on the web and look up goverment statistics and compare cities by population and crime. I live in Dayton, Ohio. 1 of 4 cities in Ohio that stay in the top 20. Dayton, Youngstown, Cleveland, Cinncinati are all cities struken with poverty crime and drugs with no real leadership to fix the wounds the whole state is soon to be known as The Ghetto. OHIO History> They call us the heart of it all. Its tru, Dayton is the birthplace of the projects and them wire wheels, 2nd behind Detroit in lost of jobs with a population of only 157,000 this small city is the Definition of Ghetto. There is no bad and good parts of the city. The whole city has feel victim to demoralization in the early 60s and as I said in the begining its been written. Too All Big Cities who dont understand that Ghettos dont have billions of dollars in the city, there is no million airs in the Ghetto, Bentlys dont exist here. Dayton is a nice size city not to have its own movie theater or liscense beural. Crime,forclosure,poverty,and drugs drove nearly all forms of entertainment and shopping outside the city limits. Medical practice is the only future for a city who has no hope. When millions get spent in this city its for the hostpitals. At least we have Great doctors that helps keep the murder rate down. So the next time you here anybody mention the ghetto remember they must be talking about Dayton,Ohio A.K.A The Ghetto.

Sean, that is simply not true. Memphis is not too bad. It has some bad areas, (orange mound used to be bad.. don’t know if it still is), but compared to other cities of comparable size, it is not bad. Memphis has a murder rate of about 20 per 100,000. New Orleans is anywhere from 70 to 95 per 100,000. That is crazy. The second highest murder rate in the country would be Detroit at about 55 per 100,000.

New Orleans has also been ranked as having the second highest murder rate in the WORLD for 2008. Behind Caracas, Venuezuela.

These rankings are based on statistics (FACTS) from a “per capita” basis…..meaning, a ratio to population. So yes, New Orleans is worse than New York City because they have more murders/crimes based on the population. Example: population city x = 1000 people and 70 crimes equates to a 7% crime rate. population city z = 5000 people and 150 crimes equates to a 3% crime rate. Even though city z has double the amout of crimes, the ratio of crimes per captia (person) is still less than city x. Get it? Of course there is crime everywhere, it is just ranked by how many people live in each city by the amount of crime that takes place there.

they did this list by inacurate statistics every metropolitana area has a high crime rate it is really hard to say who has the highest crime rate philly is the most dagerous city in the united states theres 9 year old kids shooting cops and dea agents being killed we havent had less then 380 murders in one year as far back as i can remember and in 2007 we had close to 500 murders and they were just the bodies that were found theres close to 125,000 condemned houses in philladelphia {hint}if you think new orleans and memphis and the other cities listed are the most dagerous take a look at neighborhoods in north philly west and southwest philly its a fuckin concrete jungle

Honestly, though –
It wasn’t BAD bad until after Hurricane Katrina.
People from New Orleans evacuated here, and then stayed.

Of course, if we ever get rid of Herenton, we’re on the right track.

Look up murder rates for Philadelphia in 2007-2008. Last I recall it was 2.5 homicides per day, which is why people call it Killadelphia. Downtown isn’t too bad, but north and northwest philly are terrible.

How come no one has mentioned Phoenix, AZ? I’ve lived in phoenix all my life and visited bay area and all kinds of places…Never have I been as threatened as I am constantly on my own streets in phoenix, mainly because of our meth problem. We have the HIGHEST meth addiction/spread rate of any other state i think….

for example:
few months ago a tweaker comes up to me in my own neighborhood with a grill in his hand, peaking through my car window…asking me if i wanted to buy a grill? I said no thanks man because i could tell he had just stolen it from all the sweat and the panicing and he innsisted i give him money for it and then looked me dead in the eye and asked me if i had any money…this guy looked so crazy I couldn’t take my eye off him because I thought he would take any chance he could at jacking me or my car… I’ve had 5/8 of my family vehicles stolen within the past 7 years…are all your cities this bad? if they’re that much worse you must come home to a gun fight outside your front door every night??

So your saying a city where your likely to get your car stolen is worse than a city where its likely that you will get shot a killed…a stupid comment. Having the most gangs in the nation doesn’t make your city the most dangerous, you don’t have to be in a gang to shoot someone, in fact it would be a lot easier to just walk up and kill someone if you had a clean criminal record. The suburb comment, I’ll answer this one with a question. So your actually saying Philly is a worse city because its the other cities suburbs doing all the crime… Go to any of the cities on that list and tell me how many people get killed in the suburb as opposed to downtown. I very highly doubt any suburb anywhere is going to rack up a higher murder rate than the actually city. Last of all you really have to be stupid saying your city should be number one when it isn’t even on the list. You bringing up a city that isn’t even in the running and saying it should be first on the list, you’re just stupid.

Its true people shouldnt talk and brag about how tough their city is also it might be but yeah people should work on that it gets better. like it is true that L.A. is The Gang Capitel of The Nation not in The World. Cape Town or Caracass are much worse. Their might be noother city as Detroit in The US but their def much worse outside of WarZone in The World. I came to The US one year ago and used to stay here many times before and lived in one of the toughest neighbourhoods in this country included South Central LA. I admit that are pretty scary places but all what i witnessed in L.A.,San Francisco,New York….. nothing i didnt witness in Europe as well. Depressed right when he mentions the comparison to SOME but not all Third World Countries.Their was already the good example Caracass mentioned Caracass is The Murder Capitel of The World and not just very uncomfortable regarding this crime but all serious crimes. tough not as that violent but similiar with Johannesburg. I have been to South Africa two years ago its like depressed says it having lived in The American Ghettos as well compared to South Africans it are Beverly Hills. so i say people come ones to South Africa, live their and expirience what is going on their. I learned know a lot of people here from South Africa which immigrated to The US through the fear of safetiness in this country like i have South African Friends which have been to The US and they all said for them its pitty crime. I admit The Crime Rate in the US is freaking high and some cities became horrible but Detroit or New Orleans still arent Rio,Johannesburg,Sao Paulo or Caracass. uptownN.O as i wrote i lived in South Central,Inglewood and Compton as well thats why i know it is bad but also as i mentioned not the worst but still they are far away of being nice neighbourhoods. i know it arent the worst and that their are many existing which are worse. but when you talk about dangerous cities South Central is not a city but just a city part. These posts are all indicative of why none of these issues are being addressed by our politicians, and the citizens they are supposed to representing. I understand that the nature of humanity is one that is mysterious and chaotic. We need education in these areas. We need drug outreach, we need needle exchange, we need health clinics, we need homelessness alternatives. The fact that people are debating and comparing the murder rates of their city as if it was something to wear on their sleeves seems unconscionable. Every society has their problems. We must not dwell on the negatives, but look forward towards our futures. What will happen to our children who live in these areas? What will happen to the poor when they are being evicted from their homes/apartments due to gentrification of their neighborhood. Don’t become a statistic. We all have minds, we all have free will. Whether its through a higher power or common sense we must see through all the lies of the media and status quo. Black people, latino people, asian people, world people, never give up hope.

It doesn’t matter where you go in the world, third world or U.S., there are more hard-working, law-abiding people that live in these neighborhoods then there are hardcore gangsters and criminals. It doesn’t matter weither you are trying to qualify your city by crimes-per-capita, or you see a dead body everyday, just do one thing for me. Tell the youngones that this way of life is BULLSHIT. I have yet to meet a hardcore “gangsta” that hasn’t been to prison, and have yet to meet a “O.G” that doesn’t regret some form of “dirt” that they have commited. Tell the kids that an education will take them anywhere, but also tell them that moving from an ounce to a key is a bullshit goal!

Speaking as someone who was born and raised in New Orleans, I can verify that its listing as the most dangerous city is 100% accurate. Don’t get me wrong, New Orleans is a city that has a very rich and diverse culture, one that is impossible to recreate anywhere but you have to be extremely cautious. A lot of websites will post inaccurate data on the city and that is largely because of the Louisiana legislature and the New Orleans local officials. New Orleans thrives on a tourist based economy, so what would you do if you were in their shoes and need to funnel as much money into the city as possible? Anyone who lives in the ‘real New Orleans’ knows this is true. City officials have always cared more about the people who visit the city more than the people who live and work there. They falsify crime statistics for the pure purpose of drawing more tourists to the city and somewhat lighten up the image of it being a violent city. 1994 was the year New Orleans was first given the nickname ‘murder capital’. 421 people were killed that year; a record that has yet to be matched by any major city to date. Other cities have moved up in murder statistics but New Orleans always rises back to the top, and for the worst possible reason. For all its glitz, glamour and rich history, New Orleans truly is the city that care forgot.

I am from SC and North Charleston is the neighbor of my hometown, Charleston. I’m ashamed to be on that list. In the twenties in LA, the LAPD used to shoot violent offenders onsite. Granted they were corrupt, but if you could find honest cops to do that, let’s fast-track-clean this country out. We already have it good, ‘ghetto’ or not. We could have it better. To all of those that are bragging about how dangerous their neighborhood is, if you could spell, then “Maybe” you would see where we are coming from. All this racist crap talking about how whites dont come to your “hood”, I used to go Detroit and Flint at night, and as you might have guessed, I am white. Get with the times. We have a black president, neighborhoods have mixed races (regardless of finacial class), and countries where no-one could vote before, not only can vote now, but women can vote now as well. Not to brag, but I have been shot at, stabbed, and have seen more drugs then most of these “keyboard killers”, but I am ashamed of these facts, and am working on improving my life. Very good point Chocolatmood. What it really boils down to is that a lot of our youth unfortunately do not have someone to look up to, be it a father or whatever. Being young also usually means being very impressionable. When they see gangs and what they wrongfully perceive as “respect” that the gang members get by using guns as well as the easy money, it becomes a no-brainer for them. They also see this so called “gangsta” attitude glorified by the media, be it MTV or a thousand other outlets, and it only adds to the problem. Why study and work hard when they think they can make $500.00 in one night selling drugs???
Unfortunately what they fail to see are the consequences of their actions…addiction, std’s, unwanted pregnancies, prison time and ultimately death. Don’t see too many 40-60 year old “gang bangers!!!!”
We all know that there is no easy fix for all this. No one wants to assume responsibility, and the government doesn’t give a sh*t due to the fact that every one they throw in prison is $$$$ in their pocket.
Bottom line is that it isn’t just a “black, latino, asian or white” problem, it is a problem that involves all of us!!!!

a higher per capita murder rate than the 3 other notorious
grimey small cities of Compton, Gary, or East St Louis all

data alone.It’s based several crime categories. If a city
with the highest murder rate doesn’t rank as high as a city
with a lower murder rate that ranks higher in all the other
crime categories, the city the lower murder rate will be listed
as more dangerous than the city with the highest murder rate.
A perfect example is the fact that Detroit, until this year
has been more dangerous than New Orleans every year recently
even though Detroit has not posted a higher per capita
murder rate than New Orleans in any single year from 2000-2008.
It’s homicide data that determines the murder capital, not the

what could be the common thread that runs through all these cities… hmmm… let’s see now… could it be the high percentage of blacks? specifically black men? black men who irresponsibly father children they never take care of, can not afford, and leave to become little carbon copies of their anti-productive, anti-american selves? i always hear, “but there aren’t any jobs here”. Mayberry is the most dangerous city in the whole USA. Why just the other day Aunt Bea went to get her hair did…and do you know some kid on a bike darted right out in front of her as she was a walkin across the street. Well Aunt Bea, she ainta gonna take all that. See she been places..like Mount Airy…she done seen things we can only imagine. Well she done retch in her bag o goodies and pulled out a umbrella and took to goosin that boy til he went ass over tea kettle right over his handle bars. I’ve lived in memphis my whole life and as sad as it is to say as long as your not black in memphis you’ll be fine. Almost all of the violent crimes committed in this city are black on black. As for the people bragging about their high crime rates get off the computer and join a volunteer orgganization to help clean up your city. As for Memphis, I love this place. I truely believe that it is one of the authentic cities left in this country. You only see fabricated strip malls and housing in the burbs, there isn’t even a wal-mart in the inner city! Almost all of the resturants, bars, and stores in the city are personally owned and operated or they are home grown franchises like Corkey’s BBQ and Huey’s. I would rather live in this dirty crime ridden city than cookie cutter cities like Nashville and Knoxvile. They may have lower crime rates but there cities have no character.

Remember the big cities dont have nearly as much crime because the justice department labels crimes differently these days. For instance first degree murder would be reduced to manslaughter which it doesnt count in murder statistics as a plausible murder crime. They can find 500 murdered victims and reduce a percentage of them as accidental deaths to keep the crime relatively low so it doesnt cause a white flight like back in the late 70s. Also the ones representing there hoods should realize your not the one shot and the one pulling the trigger. Individuals who take pride in the urban decay and blight crimes are subject to labeled as wanna bees and so on. Irvington NJ would most defintely be posted as the most dangerous city in the nation but the city’s population remain relatively small compared to cities like N.O and Detroit. 55 murders out 78,000 people seems shocking if you ask me.

A lot of you really need to go back to kindergarten and learn to spell correctly. If you cannot spell ‘for’ then you are in very poor shape. Talking about how “Bad” your city is makes you look like an ignorant fool.

Anyway. I’m very surprised St. Louis is on here instead of East St. Louis. I have always been warned to stay out of East St. Louis.
