Outhouse Considered 1/4 Bath

OuthouseSearching the real estate news you do come across the most interesting tidbits of information.

We all know a full bath is considered a bathroom with a tub or shower. And a half bath is a bathroom with a vanity and toilet but lacking a shower.

But did you know that an Outhouse is considered a 1/4 Bath? While I doubt that many real estate agents include an outhouse in a 2009 listing, if you ever run across a 1 3/4 bathroom house now you know what it refers to.

I’m impressed that you remember the exact publication date. The little item you’re asking about came at the end of a weeks-long discussion about just what was meant by a half-bath, three-quarters bath and the like. The letter read:

“Back in the late ’70s, I was searching for a home in New England. In one ad, the house was listed with 11/4 baths. When I asked the real estate agent what that meant, I was told the property included an outhouse (one quarter). I guess at that time it was a fairly common practice.” via Daily Herald

  2. Nice who would have thought it.

  3. I had a client list a home that had 1 and 1/4 bath. When I pressed for an explanation she indicated that the 1/4 bath had just a toilet but no sink …. yuckkkk!

  4. That is horrible Albany. Who would put a toilet in without a sink?

  5. Keep in mind that many consider a 3/4 bath to be a sink, toilet and shower – whereby a full bath has a tub.

I have seen homes with a toilet in the laundry room… but there were also mud sinks. :)

  6. umm, my brother-in-law lives in a home that only has an outhouse… and He’s a plumber.
