InternshipIf you are a college student looking to intern with a real estate company this year, good luck. The prevailing wisdom is that the internship possibilities are few and far between as real estate firms of all types have hunkered down.

That is not to say that there are no opportunities. If I had to bet, top producing commercial and residential agents across the country are still busy. Instead of looking to a broker to provide the opportunity, go ask an agent. The pay may be bad or worse, but the opportunity to learn in the trenches on how the industry works will still be there.

And learning on the ground instead of an office may be the best experience you can get.

“It’s a tough market for kids out there majoring in real estate. They’re going to have a tough time finding employment or even internships,” he said. “But I’ve been in this for 32 years and my philosophy has always been to prepare students to do anything in finance because the real estate market is so cyclical and at times, there may be little or no employment, but there will always be real estate changing hands.”

At TCU, real estate is offered as a concentration area within the business school’s finance major. Lipscomb said the program is set up so finance students with a real estate emphasis can still find employment should the real estate market be in a downturn. And though students are largely encouraged to do summer internships in their professions, the current real estate market ultimately is dictating students’ choices. Fort Worth Business Press.

  1. I feel bad for any new grad right now, from any industry. RE is not alone in the hard hit recession, and a lot of my friends are having a very tough time getting and keeping a job.

  2. I feel sorry for those students who are having difficulties in finding a real estate company… The economy is down today, lots of fresh graduates are having a hard time looking for a job. We need HOPE today!

  3. Hi Guys

This is really hard time to find jobs and internship this year. Specially in property and car industry. We are looking for a student for online marketing department. if any one interested , please contact us.

    Thank you

  4. Actually, I’m from California and I’m currently interning for MyHome.ie in Ireland and getting some great exposure to the markets. So don’t lose faith! Those real estate jobs are still out there!

I too am a real estate concentration under the finance department at the USC Marshall School of Business and they obviously have great networking skills since they set me up with this overseas internship. When you’re picking a college keep in mind the networking capacities your school has, especially if you are majoring in business.
