Could We See Shrink Wrapped Homes Waiting To Be Sold?

ShrinkwrapWhen I think of shrink wrap I tend not to think of housing. That is a novel idea being floated by the Reno, Nevada company Fast Wrap. Wrap an unsold home in shrink wrap to protect it from the elements and preserve it till the market turns around.

Fast Wrap, a franchise operation based in Reno, Nev., describes its work as asset protection. Think shrink-wrapping on a massive scale. Now trying to get a foothold in South Florida, Fast Wrap claims to physically protect everything from furniture to cars to boats — and even houses and industrial buildings. It has 11 franchises, and recently opened one in Dania Beach, conveniently close to a slew of foreclosed homes in the tri-county area.

The last ones, in particular are proving to be a boon to Fast Wrap. The company applies a film (available in white and several other colors) that takes the shape of the property to which it’s applied. The company increasingly finds itself wrapping incomplete homes and larger developments to protect the properties from the elements and keep out the unwanted. via  The Real Deal

Now I would not be too thrilled if one of my neighbors had their homes shrink wrapped, I can promise you. But if I was living in a zombie subdivision and these homes were degrading or being damaged by vandals I probably would not mind.

All I would ask is that they do not use the plastic cases that electronic equipment comes in to store these homes. They are a real pain to open and I would not want to see any builders hurt.

  1. Interesting idea. Though I think we are going to see more of that anyway since green prefabricated houses are probably where most things are going to go when the locally sourced materials are not available.

  2. Seems to be an interesting idea. I assume we will get more to see like this.

  3. Awesome! But one can not ensure a peaceful and healthy life around this circumstances. We can have this life style as part of our life. But i wont be apt for the life cycle.

  4. Interesting idea…but what happens next?

  5. A shrink-wrapped house probably would look even worse than just a regular old abandoned one.

  6. Can you imagine how hot it would get in that house without airflow, i would have thought it would do more damage than good.
