Using Real Estate To Recruit Student Athletes at University of Minnesota
Hey real estate types, we have made the big time.
Back in my day all it took was cash or a new car to recruit top level athletes to college programs. Now coaches may be using real estate as part of the process.
Now I am not saying he has done so, but there is an investigation into the recruiting practices of University of Minnesota’s wresting program and their coach, J Robinson, on how people associated with the team own 55 properties near the campus.
Some of these homes are owned by current and former teammates.
(For the real estate agents, here is a tip, get in good with the coaching staff if you have a major college nearby. You may have a new niche!)
In total, people affiliated with the team have owned at least 55 different properties near campus, according to property records. This includes Robinson, two assistant coaches, a team staff member, a former assistant coach, a current wrestler and seven former wrestlers. All but one of the properties are located in the Marcy-Holmes and Southeast Como neighborhoods.
University Athletics Director Joel Maturi expressed surprise at the number of properties that have been owned by people with ties to the team in a recent interview with The Minnesota Daily.
“To say to you that I’m not concerned would not be entirely accurate,” Maturi said.
When asked about a number of specific transactions, Maturi repeatedly said they needed to be looked into by the University’s Athletic Compliance Office. via MnDaily.com

This is a new one. Maybe they have a really good business school and most of the westling team are business majors.
