Perusing the web this morning I came across this article on a seminar put on in Orange County, New York on buying your first home. I may be out of the loop, but are these common?
If not, they are a great idea. Offer introductory classes on homebuying basics for new homebuyers and provide booths for vendors and industry experts. The net result is you have better educated buyers entering the process who are interested in purchasing their first home.
You could develop a group of homebuyers that are better prepared thus reducing the issues at sales time and hopefully avoid some of the pitfalls that we are seeing with the rash of foreclosures.
No wonder, then, that hundreds of would-be home owners gladly subjected themselves to hours of education yesterday during Orange County’s inaugural “Catch the Dream” home- buyer expo.
They sat through 70-minute lectures titled “Home Buying 101″ then split up for smaller classes on credit management, grant programs and the like, filing into a row of classrooms near the SUNY Orange gym.
On the floor of the gymnasium, meanwhile, dozens of vendors hawked mortgages, real-estate and legal services. via the recordonline.com

I attended something like this prior to buying a condo in Seattle and it was incredibly helpful. The classes brought light to a lot of different potential issues I didn’t originally consider and helped to prepare me for the transaction process. I would definitely recommend something like this for first time buyers.
