Tyler Perry Buys Atlanta Mansion To Tear It Down

by Tom Royce on August 18, 2010

Dean-gardensFor those who know of Tyler Perry’s work on television and in the movies, he is often congratulated on bringing down the house. Now in real life he may just be doing so.

The word on the street is that Perry bought the newly built 32,000 foot mansion on a 58 acre property that runs along the Chattahoochee River just north of Atlanta. The home that took 4 years to build will now be torn down so Perry can build his own dream house.

The actor and entertainment mogul who is the creative force behind TBS sitcoms “Meet the Browns” and “House of Payne,” may soon take up residence in north Fulton County. Perry is the new owner of Dean Gardens, a 58-acre estate on Old Milton Parkway in Johns Creek, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal.

The $7.6 million property sale was completed in late July, according to FMLS, the local real estate listing service, but the buyer was not named. The house, most recently assessed at $6.5 million, took more than four years to build. Off and on the market for 15 years, it was to have been the dream home of the former property owner Larry Dean and his former wife, Lynda, but they separated not long after construction was completed…

The 32,000-square-foot mansion currently on the property will be torn down and it is believed Perry will build his own home. The gardens and location along the Chattahoochee River were two of Perry’s favorite features of the property, the source said.

It's amazing that someone would buy a mansion just for the property. Must be a great location. Perry must have money to burn:)

It looks like some awesome property, but wow, just tearing down 32,000 sq ft of new construction? I've heard Perry structured his movie deals so that he made a TON of money on them. Much more than a normal writer/director. So yeah, he can afford to just tear it down I guess.

I'm a huge fan of Mr Perry and his many works but I am disapointed to hear he is going to tear down the house. I have been watching this house for quite some time while it has been on the market and to say that it is beautiful is an understatement. Something so amazing should be shared and admired by all.

First of all alot of your facts are inaccurate. I live in Johns Creek near The Dean Estate. The home is not "newly built" as you mentioned. The home is also over 20 years old. Secondly, the home is located on Old Alabama Road, not Old Milton Parkway. Other facts that you left out about the home, Grammy Award Winning Singer Toni Braxton wed at the estate in 2001. Singer Micheal Jackson considered purchasing the home in the early 90's. In other Tyler Perry news, he is also reportedly purchasing another metro Atlanta Estate, La Reve, in Cumming, Georgia. It is Georgia's most expensive estate valued at $45 million. http://www.luxist.com/2008/03/23/la-reve-estate-o…

Really huge and awesome place to have as a property but one should have loads of money like Mr Perry to buy it. It can only be dreamt by a person to have their property on such a beautiful and amazing location and I guess Mr perry will build one of the most beautiful home for him on it.

Personally, I think it's great that he bought it and understand why he would want to tear down and rebuild. The property is prime and absolutely beautiful. It's a rare find in the heavily developed area (Old Alabama Rd.) The actual house, not so fabulous. Remember huge, flashy homes can be built in horrible taste, just as any other home can.

What I find interesting is that the tear down and rebuild of this home will be a huge project, bringing badly needed work to tradesmen and providers of home building goods and services. I hope he enjoys his new homesite for many years to come.

I can't imagine a mansion that is worth millions will just be torn down.. Perhaps, I can't afford to watch it while it's being torn down.. He's probably a nature lover millionaire.
