Google Expands Real Estate Presence

by Tom Royce on June 17, 2006

Google_logoGoogle, the search engine that plans to be all things computer, is expanding into real estate. Not the Zillow way or online, but they are purchasing up real estate to house the expanded workforce they are hiring. They have purchased the Silicon Graphics building in Mountain View and are spending over 319 million in total on real estate.

The purchase includes Google’s existing headquarters at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway and nearby property that is home to Silicon Graphics Inc., a computer imaging company that is in bankruptcy protection.
Both locations are in Mountain View in the Silicon Valley area about 40 miles south of San Francisco.
The company disclosed the planned purchase in a regulatory filing. “We’re pleased to expand our Mountain View campus to accommodate our growing employee population,” Google spokesman Barry Schnitt said in an e-mailed statement. He declined to comment further. via CNN Money.

Your blog about Google getting into real estate by buying real estate lead me to ponder again an earlier discussion. Will Google get into the Realtors business? What at are your thoughts on whether they will or will not? Many Realtors think that they might. There appears to be a growing feeling that companies such as Google, Yahoo and Craigslist may get into the real estate brokerage business and change the industry forever.
