Is Suburbia and Exurbia Threatened By President Obama?

by Tom Royce on February 13, 2009

ObamaIt looks like the suburban lifestyle, and definitely the exurban families, are not in favor of the new President, Barack Obama. He has announced that he is against building sprawl, as he call suburbia, and will work to focus his efforts on the urban landscape.

I am sure that real estate agents across the country will be thrilled to hear this.

That’s why I’d like to see high speed rail where it can be constructed. That’s why I would like to invest in mass transit because potentially that’s energy efficient and I think people are alot more open now to thinking regionally in terms of how we plan our transportation infrastructure. The days where we’re just building sprawl forever, those days are over. I think that Republicans, Democrats, everybody recognizes that that’s not a smart way to build communities. So we should be using this money to help spur this kind of innovative thinking when it comes to transportation. That will make a big difference. via Gas 2.0.

I see the points he is trying to make but there are many smarter and more efficient ways to build suburban communities. There are many communities now that encourage walking and biking. Residents of these "small, mixed use" communities can work, shop, and live all in close proximity to each other.
