Just after finishing high school I had the opportunity to head to Australia for a year as an exchange student. It was a life changing experience, but as an American in a different culture I spent a great deal of time getting comfortable. Everything was in English but it was a much different English than the New York version I was accustomed to.
So when the opportunity to do this paid ReviewMe review of Gumtree’s Melbourne Rental Properties page, I caught my interest.

What struck me first about the page was this was the Australian version of Craigslist. We are so used to the spartan site here in the states that I did not even know Gumtree existed. The Melbourne Rental Properties page offers two ways to search for properties, either through scrolling through the list or searching by keyword, type of property, and bedrooms. Their is also the ability to find commercial or short term properties for rent.
The listings were easy to navigate and finding a property was a snap. While we always are looking for 100 different bells and whistles in a site, Craigslist and Gumtree are proving that simplicity can be very effective. RSS feeds and email subscription option are also provided so that you can follow the market in your reader and not have to visit the page on a regular basis.
When I was living in Australia a site like this would have made things so much easier. Of course, if the internet existed in 1983 the world would be a different place.
So this review is not the sort of review that I normally do, but it also provided me the chance to see how the Craigslist model works in Australia. We are planning on going to Australia for a month in a couple of years and knowing that their are services such as Gumtree available will make the trip that much easier as we navigate the land down under.
Again, this was a paid review using the ReviewMe! service. Please click here if you are interested in signing up for a review or looking to do reviews on your site.
