Selling Your Home Using Twitter

by Tom Royce on April 3, 2009

Fellow Twitterer DJ Waldow (@djwaldow) is using the viral marketing of the social media application to sell his home in Durham, NC.

While he is not the first to try this, he is quickly becoming a media sensation with the story being picked up by CNN and other news sources.

For all of the real estate folks who Twitter, and there are thousands of us now, this is great news. The social media platform is allowing people to connect and interact in new ways. The viral nature of sending out links to the DJ’s home has created a buzz for him while validating the model for all of the pro’s out there.

“When I first started talking about it on Sunday, I had 108 different clicks on the site,” Waldow said. “When I Tweet something out — it could potentially be seen by a thousand people following me. But when somebody else re-Tweets it — it can be seen by a thousand people following them. So it spreads pretty quickly.”

By week’s end, more than 400 people had clicked on the link he’s “Tweeting” through the real estate site Trulia. Some of his followers are doing him a favor by reposting his messages for their friends.

“You can see all the other people re-Tweeting it,” he pointed out on his computer. “This is somebody who lives in Chapel Hill. This is a guy in Durham.”

“Some of these people on here — no idea who they are.”

One thing that could be fueling Waldow’s experiment: he’s offering $250 for the person who actually finds a buyer for the house. MyNC.com.

Thanks for the plug. Not sure about "media sensation" but certainly hoping to land a few minutes on Good Morning America or the Today Show…or better yet – Ellen!

But…at the end of the day, it's all about selling the house, right?

Thanks again.

It sounds like DJ is fortunate enough to have very strong Twitter Network. Remembering that power is in the quality of the follow and the not quantity of followers is key. If you have both, you're golden!

Twitter certainly has a lot of possibility but serious limitations as well. Still trying to figure out the best way to use it.

Twitter is such a hot topic. Everyone does everything on Twitter now. I need to get my site going. It looks like a great way to grow web traffic.

Excellent use of a new [social] medium to connect with clients and potential customers.

Great example of why we need to connect with new technologies.

I have been trying to connect with topical video's hosted on http://youtube.com/dpylyp

I wish you continued success

This is very interesting to me. I have stated over and over that I thought Twitter could never be used to sell or assist the sale of real estate. After reading this I think I have been proved wrong. Congrats to you Mr. Waldow and best of luck with this!

Twitter is interesting… I'm not sure its really reached its full potential yet, but it certainly shows a lot of promise. I am still trying to figure out how best to use it. I do think that social networking is the next step in real estate sales. I've found its the best way to keep in touch with my "sphere of influence" and can constantly keep them reminded of what I can do for them as a real estate professional.

This is good example for social media networking. Most of agents just joined social media sites, but not using after few weeks. Now im getting around 14% web traffic from socal media sites. Quality is not great but still it is free traffic and good for branding.

I read and enjoy your blog. I wanted to suggest a site to check out, which might be good for a post on online tools for real estate agents and sellers. It’s called TweetLister (http://www.tweetlister.com) and it just launched yesterday. TweetLister allows you to post, schedule and manage real estate listings on Twitter, and collect and download contacts you get through those listings. It’s a free service. We’ve already gotten a good amount of buzz, and I would love to read your take on it.

I enjoyed the article. It is an interesting use of social networking to market real estate. With so many different mediums emerging in the marketplace almost daily, it is hard to keep up.

How did this work out for him? It doesn't seem to be too far a leap from someone selling a home over Twitter versus renting a home over twitter. Does anyone have the marketing data on how well homes are selling or renting over Twitter? Thanks.

Great stuff. I think we'll learn a lot about using these social media websites like Twitter in the real estate sector. Thanks.
