Real estate agents often have a hard time separating themselves from the herd and standing out, all of that unique selling proposition stuff. But I am impressed and a bit amused at the attempts of Daniel Berman of Pacific Century Realty in the San Francisco Bay Area.
He is promoting himself as the Vegetarian Broker. I am not sure that that would be the differentiator in determining ones choice in agents. I like steak but would not hire an agent because he said he was the Top sirloin of agents and he eats meat.
But, I have to give high marks to the promotional value of what Daniel has done. He has found a niche and the idea of a common world view may make buyers and sellers feel more comfortable with him.
Real estate agents commonly put out that they are members of a certain church or organization for the same reason. Who here does not put in their bio where they go to church or what organizations they belong to. Daniel is just coming at it from a different angle.
“Are you a vegetarian or vegan preparing to buy or sell a house? Are you dreading the thought of the contact you will be forced to have with real-estate agents, as part of the process (the same way most people dread upcoming encounters with used car salesmen)? You are not alone!” broker Daniel Berman from Pacific Century Realty writes on his website.
Berman addresses the obvious question — what difference does it make to have a real-estate agent who is vegetarian as opposed to a meat eater — head on. “Simply stated, it’s a matter of shared values, an approach to life and a way of relating to others,” he says. Adding: “If you’ve been a vegetarian (or vegan) for any length of time, you know what I mean.” SF Gate.

I also find it interesting that people would gravitate towards another vegetarian for their real estate agent, but it does not surprise me at all. Personally, I feel better working with those that have similar lifestyles too, so it makes sense that he takes advantage of this niche.

Its interesting that everyone looks for that edge or hook to get noticed (image building). Its no wonder that 57% of all real estate transactions are done by the “branded” agencies. What is the other 43% doing to attact business? In this tranistion period of the real estate industry, it would make more sense to be with some brand that would be an “industry recongnized” name, unfortunatly, the price and restrictions seem too high. Being new to the industry, I’m looking for a “name” or brand for myself while staying independent and not paying the majority of my commission to franchise, advertising, desk fees…etc. Someone should come up with a new idea for the independents who want something different.
I completely understand the shared values angle. Sometimes Christians like to do business with others who share their values and lifestyles as well.
Maybe…sounds like it could blow up in his face if he's not careful though…
This is the time to be cautious about this type of things.
Ah… seems like a new marketing stunt to gain a few clients!
