The news just broke on West Point, Georgia getting the Kia Plant. This will be a huge boon to the state and regions economy.
Kia Motors Corp., a subsidiary of Korean automaker Hyundai, announced Sunday it would build a $1.2 billion manufacturing plant along Interstate 85 in West Point, Ga., about an hour from Montgomery.
The announcement was made earlier today in Seoul by Kia CEO Euisun Chung and Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue. The company expects to employ 2,500 workers and begin production in 2009. Kia anticipates sales in the U.S. will reach 800,000 vehicles by 2010, according to a company news release. via The Montgomery Advertiser
The firm also said in a statement it expected its sales in North America, including the United States and Canada, to rise 15 percent to 350,000 vehicles in 2006 and to grow to 800,000 by 2010.The carmaker expects the new plant, which will begin production in 2009, to produce up to 300,000 vehicles a year and employ about 2,500 workers. via CNN

UPDATE: 3–13–06 – The Ledger Enquirer has a great timeline on the process of putting together the deal. Outstanding work by Chuck Williams, a must read. What I am the most impressed is how KIA found the site and then empowered Georgia to put it together in total secrecy.
