The growth in the size of houses has been documented over the years. Now the Census Bureau has come out with an interesting report on homes that are larger that 4 bedrooms. We live in the #2 ranked county for home sizes, a bedroom community of Atlanta, and to be honest living here it seems like every one is in a 4 bedroom house.
The combination of low land costs and access to good paying jobs locally and in Atlanta has created a county of mini mansions. What is even more amazing is that most of the homes built before 1980 were 3 or less bedrooms.

Having spent 10 years in Utah, it doesn’t surprise me to see them #1. With the emphasis on large families, the affluent resorts, and the low cost of housing, they stay #1 for a long time.
That doesn’t surprise me. Utah’s large Mormon population would drive up this percentage because of their emphasis on large families.
Not to mention the low water table allows for a basement in almost every instance. There are a lot of smaller homes (from the outside) that were built in the 30s, 40s, and 50s…but they all have 4 or 5 bedrooms…with basements giving families a lot of extra space.
Yeah, that's amazing. But then again, people were a lot smaller before 1980.
