If you thought the scams being run on Craigslist were just on ripping off prospective tenants as we talked about before here, you are missing the other side of the coin. Landlords are in just as much danger.
The new scam involves renters sending fake cashiers checks and money orders. The landlord is thrilled to receive the money, deposits it, and then something happens to blow up the deal. It is not until the landlord has refunded the money do they find out that the cashiers check was fake and they are on the hook to return the money.
The scam artist is long gone before the landlord finds this out.
The ICC continues to receive complaints about potential renters who have written counterfeit checks to cover deposits only to back out of the agreements and ask for refunds, investigators say.
In another common ruse, scammers duplicate legitimate real estate postings, often using the brokers’ real names, but re-post the ads using fake e-mail addresses.
When potential renters or buyers request information via e-mail, the owner asks them to send money. Sometimes, the scammers claim they are doing missionary work and the money is sent to destinations in foreign countries, investigators say.

We get about 1 call every month related to a real estate scam on Craigslist. I try to visit my local craigslist real estate section every few days to flag the obvious scams.
CL is a crazy mess sometimes. I'll get response emails on a daily basis that are nothing but scammers. Get's pretty annoying honestly. But, CL is the big ad medium now, so I suppose it's to be expected.
I don't recommend CL in most cases…I use it for hiring, finding baby stuff, computers and bikes…anything else is a waste of time or a risk.
I have noticed a lot of people using Facebook as a way to find renters and roommates. This way your target is from people, family and friends you can trust. It's worth a try anyway before you resort to Craigslist.
CL is cool but always be on the look out for scams! =)
One of the reasons why you should have a professional property manager handle the management of your investment properties. Most scammers are looking to make a quick buck and will target easy prey.
Tony what you just advised is BS, i know people that were scamed by a professional property managers.
They collected the rent checks deposited them but never paid the morgage company, taxes etc. on what they "managed" the folks I am talking of were in England for 2 years and had their state side property managed. Scams come at you every which way, you are not safe with a professional management company.
They then left town, the fpolks I am talking of were in business for several years, and had a very visible presence ads, yard signs etc.
Has anyone had their real estate listings copied from Trulia, Realtor.com, etc. . . ., then posted on CL as "for rent"? My sellers are really creeped out. Not sure if this is a scam of some sort that I don't understand or just harrassment?

Been finding and FLAGGING many scammers.
It’s us versus them (scamers), If everyone flags his own “niche” of search that daily browse , craigslist will be CLEAN!!! of spammers and scammers. Craigslist removes post flagged from multiple IP addresses, if we have everyone search narrow to his own niche and flag spam posts, we get clean result.
I recommend this application to all my friends, and we keep our craigslist niche clean!

We received an email like the one above from a Proffesor (their spelling, not mine) Paul Pitcher from Glasgow university supposedly. Gave us a story about being in the states for at least a year and wanted to pay the rent up front with cash. We went to the Glasgow University site and there was no mention of this "Professor" in any of their departments. We figured the guy was scamming us – so beware of Dr. Paul Pitcher – because he's definitely pitching a line!
The post was on craigslist MD for a rental house for only 700$/month. "owner" called himself a missionary "educating people in West Nigeria" and requested $500 deposit in exchange for the key. It even mentioned the utilities to be included…The contact number listed starts with 011234.. and uses the name Dr James David
Person claiming from UK, an engineer, working for General Dynamics, was to work here for 1 year. She claimed to be UK citizen born there, but with lousy English, sent phony check from AZ. I turned it over to FBI. Never heard again from "tenant."
This guy emailed me too, I'm going to turn him in to General Dynamics using a good company like that. A researcher on the net. I call bull shit.

I am very suspicious about this, so I found this bog on the web, and now will terminate the interaction and try reporting suspicious activity to someone (who?):

I am curious as to what others have done about this scam. Is there any recourse? If I allow him to send the money order can it be traced?
