Instructions For Your St. Joseph Statue and Selling Your Home

  • by Tom Royce
  • September 5, 2007

St Joseph helps sell homesWhen homes are slow in selling, St. Joseph makes an appearance somewhere in America’s front lawn helping to provide divine support. Even I used the ubiquitous statue during a particularly slow period when I was selling my last home. And it did sell shortly after we buried the statue.

Since the slowdown in real estate sales has happened, sales of the statues have taken off. I figured I would be of help and offer some advice and directions on the burial of the St. Joseph statues.

Directions for burying a St. Joseph Statue:

  • Dig a hole near your For Sale sign by the street approximately 3 inches deeper than the statue. If you have no yard, use a large plant pot.
  • Place the St. Joseph statue facing the street in the hole.
  • When covering the statue, prayers should be said. They are very often included in the packaging. I have the prayer at the end of this post past the jump.
  • Once you have sold you home, remove the statue and place in your new home.

And there you go. Again, many will scoff at the use of the statue but when the market is slow and you are a believer, it can not hurt.

PRAYER TO SAINT JOSEPH FOR SELLING A HOUSE

O, Saint Joseph,
you who taught our Lord
the carpenter's trade,
and saw to it
that he was always properly housed,
hear my earnest plea.

I want you to help me now
as you helped your foster-child Jesus,
and as you have helped many others
in the matter of housing.

I wish to sell this [house/property]
quickly, easily, and profitably
and I implore you to grant my wish
by bringing me a good buyer,
one who is
      eager, compliant, and honest,
and by letting nothing impede the
      rapid conclusion of the sale.

Dear Saint Joseph,
I know you would do this for me
out of the goodness of your heart
and in your own good time,
but my need is very great now
and so I must make you hurry
on my behalf.

Saint Joseph, I am going to place you
in a difficult position
with your head in darkness
and you will suffer as our Lord suffered,
until this [house/property] is sold.

Then, Saint Joseph, i swear
before the cross and God Almighty,
that i will redeem you
and you will receive my gratitude
and a place of honour in my home.

Amen.

It is the faith that makes this work… not the superstition about which way the statue has to face. This is not voodoo or magic.

Prayers to St. Joseph have helped many of my sellers. I’m a believer.

I heard about this activity a long time ago. When I put my house on the market two years ago, I made a promise to St. Joseph that I would never do this to him and would discourage others from doing it. My sign went up Friday afternoon, a knock on the door Saturday, and papers were signed Monday. God bless St. Joe

I find this all quite humorous yet disturbing. The agnostic part of me finds this to be superstitious hocus pocus. The Christian part of me finds this to be idolatry that has been forbidden since the Old Testament. Either way, sounds kind of stupid.

That is ridiculous. Catholic and Orthodox Christians have asked brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for their needs since the first century of the Church's existence. You can ask brothers and sisters in Christ here on earth or in the next life. The Christian doctrine of the Communion of Saints which is plainly stated in all of the early Creeds reflects the belief that members of the body of Christ are not seperated by time, space or even death!

Anyway, been buried in my yard for over a year. Still haven't sold my house. She tells me to look up the prayer and say it. I read this bit:

Saint Joseph, I am going to place you

    in a difficult position

    with your head in darkness

and you will suffer as our Lord suffered,

    until this [house/property] is sold.

And I have to say, WTF? For real? St Joseph should be one pissed off saint. "O HAI, Imma torture a statue of you until you do as I say!"

I have been in the real estate bussiness for 35 years. I have used the Saint JoJoseph Statue more than a dozen times and it has never failed me. I built a home for my mother back in 2001. Mom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. My mom was not able to move into the home that I had built for her. I built the home with many ADA features. To my suprise after signing a contract with the new buyer for moms home they explained that they are cancer survivor's and needed a home built for special needs. He moves in mysterious ways.

My Sister burried this Saint, and two days later, her neighbor's, whose house was not listed for sale, sold their house. When the Surveyors came to put in the markers for the property line, she found out she had burried the Statue in the next yard!

What ever YOU believe, is true.

I as an Italian, once catholic, non-catholic now. Placed Saint Joseph upside down a few feet from my for sale sign a few years ago(2007) when we had a horrible market and were selling. I had said no prayer. We had two interests in 2 days after burying, being on the market for 5 months, with no luck. One couple took their time before St. Joe. We buried after we planned open house, another couple that visited open house requested an immediate appointment for a private showing the enxt day, and we had our full offer and sold, we made 50% on what we put in (of couse sweat equity had a play. But after we were already under contract, the other couple wanted to make an offer We found another home two weeks later that wasn't even on the market for one day! Made an offer and we got it!

I dug up St. Joe, and place him in our new front lawn face up near the street at he end of our driveway. The job market, and unemployment has cause us to face foreclosure on our new home after 3 years but after 6 months we have our home and we have not yet to fight the bank to work with us. I also as tradition place a small cross on the top of the inner door of each entrance and exit visitors enter and exit. But they must exit the door the entered. The cross has a red ribbon over it symbolizing Jesus' sacrifice.

There is a Catholic tradition that this keeps evil from entering your home.

Perhaps St. Joe is a tradition but I do believe it sold our home and found us this home which still is being protected. And if perhaps in this phase, if it stands out to a special buyer and an offers comes in, I’d be willing to sell in a minute! And update those who are skeptics.

I have used the St.Joseph statue several times while selling my houses. I used it to sell my double wide modular home, it sold in 3 weeks!!! Now you know how hard it is to sell a mobile home. I didn’t bury the statue by the “For Sale” sign…I buried it in my backyard face down with the head of the statue facing east. I am soon going to have this house up for sale and I am going to use the statue again. I believe it works!!!

I am a believer in the saints and in St Joseph as well. The only issue I have with this prayer is that it is a blatant threat to St Joseph! Why not make the words kinder and ones that implore good St Joseph's intercession? Why musst we pray a threat to get our way? I am praying a novena for the sale of our own home right now and am modifying the verbiage. I honestly believe that St Joseph and the other Saints know what our hearts intend and will answer our prayers if they are sincere.

My home has been on market for 2 weeks and has only had three visits. It’s a nice neighborhood in a #1 school district. Last night, my young daughter and I buried our statue near the for sale sign in the front yard, facing the street, and we said the prayer together. As someone above also said, we must sell before we can make an offer on the home we are interested in, so we are in a rather dire situation-need to start new job Aug. 30th. St. Joseph, please give me strength to get through this very testing time and assist me in getting an offer soon. I am hopeful and I believe…

I have had my house on the market since March—no bites on our house yet although a few were close….I need someone's opinion. When we moved into this house eight years ago, we actually found the St. Joseph statue buried in the front lawn (in the small garden area near the front light post). Knowing the superstition of St. Joseph, my husband and I brought it in and placed it in our home. We used the same statue when trying to sell our house–said the prayer, buried him upside down–thought–we are going to selll quick–we took St. Joseph in for 8 years! However, no luck yet…..do you think we should get a new statue?

@Judy, I placed the first one I buried by the porch of my house, upside down facing the street and it worked for me. If you don’t have a lawn, you can put it in a planter.
I buried the statue last year in a market that was not just slow but in a neighborhood that was flooded in foreclosures. Our buyers were awesome and closed on time without a hitch.
I have to bury him again as we are relocating. It worked for me, it also worked for several real estate agents I worked for which is why I did it.
It may not be for everyone. I told my neighbor to do it but she felt wrong about it – they lost their home to the bank and had their home on the market longer than I had when I buried the statue. Our home was on the market less than 3 weeks when we received the accepted offer.

As a Catholic & Christian, why not just pray to the Living God?

Burying a statue of St. Joseph is just tradition and superstition.

We maybe should bury Barbie dolls to promote a good self image

for girls & boys. Or a model car, if we want a new car. These

comments should not be taken seriously. This is too close to

    witchcraft. Don't do it!

I wouldn't look to Barbie for a 'good self image'.

My favorite book on this topic is St. Joseph My Real Estate Agent by Stephen Binz. No magic, no nonsense, just a reflection on a Good Man who was entrusted with the Child Jesus.

I'm Catholic, and I too don't like too much that smatters of 'nonsense."

But, I've given small dollar store style statues to non-catholics and they've sold their homes happily. And, I havent' told them to bury it, just reflect on Jesus' foster father and the burden he had of finding and keeping shelter, and moving in a hurry!

      It couldn't hurt.

I asked St. Joseph to find my career and a good husband when I was quite young.
He sure did pray for me because I got both.

Remember, you are asking someone to pray for you.

Most Christian's I know, Catholic or Protestant, we pray for each other. And, sometimes our prayers are answered in ways we couldn't imagine.

      God bless you!

PS you don't have to bury him upside down. It all started with a medal and St. Theresa of Avila and a NEED for a property. It was her prayers and her confidence in Our loving God and asking a friend in Heaven for prayers.

Place him in a planter with a lovely set of marigolds. Or on your kitchen windowsill.

You can read the first part of Matthew and reflect on the fact that the Holy Family needed to move ASAP. Our good Lord can sympathize with our needs.

If you go to a Catholic gift shop, they sell the statue in a special box that is meant tobe put into the ground near the For Sale sign but the prayer that came with mine is NOTHING like the ones above. My says,
O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my desires. O St. Joseph, help me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from Jesus all spiritual blessings. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power,I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O St. Joseph, I never grow tired contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while he reposes near your heart. Press him in my nameand kiss his dear head for me and ask him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. Amen. O St. Josephhear my prayers and obtain my petitions, O St. Joseph pray for me.

I have a 2 family house that has been on the market for almost 3 months, no bids and only one showing. Last Wednesday I talked to my realtor and agreed to drop the price. I told her I would be in the next day to sign the papers. Wednesday evening I decided that the next day I would pick up a St. Joseph statue to put in the yard. When I got to the realtor's office Thursday morning, she said to hold off on the price reduction because the house was being shown that evening. I left her office and went straight to the Catholic store to get the statue. The ground here is frozen so I sat him in the front window, looking at the for sale sign. This morning I had a bid on the house, by this evening I had accepted an offer. I'm not really sure if it was the statue, or all the prayers to God, St. Joseph and St. Jude, but as far as I'm concerned it worked!

Let's all remember that what we're doing is asking Saint Joseph to "intercede" for us. He isn't waving a magic wand… He's taking our petition up to the Lord and asking Him to help us. It's like when you ask a friend to pray for you when times are hard. We've had to move three times so far because of work, we bought a statue each time and they have all sold quickly. When we analyzed each sale, they were all miraculous! From how the buyer found us, to how they got approved, etc. The last time we sold the house, the contract was in the DAY AFTER we buried the statue! Do it, make your own prayer (talk to him), have faith, and then let others know about it when the house sells.

My husband and I took a new job in another state back in August of 2007. We buried the statue under the for sale sign, said the prayer and covered him up. Within 3 months, the job my husband took out of state was not going well, so he resigned and moved back into our home with us (myself and our kids). We took the house off the market and removed the sign. We have just recently, 4 years later, accepted a new job in a different state again. We FEEL that this move is right within our gut this time, where as last time, we felt it wasn't right from the beginning. We did NOT remove the statue and are placing a for sale sign over it in the same place tomorrow, 8/15. Papers with the realtor were signed this afternoon and pictures were taken. My question, is I've heard leaving him in the ground and saying the 9 day Novena prayer to St. Joseph will work, and then I've heard we need to dig him up, rebury him somewhere else and say the 9 day prayer. What should we do? Leave him, or dig him up and rebury somewhere else? My realtor also placed a medallion she uses for faith of a smooth quick sale (as my husband will be moving out next weekend and living 6 hours away from us)….any suggestions??

St, Joseph helped my sell my condo in 2006 so I could buy my house. I have kept him on my front porch (in the place of honor) ever since then. Now I have listed this house and have not had one lookee-loo in a month, and my home is an adorable, remodeled cottage with all the bells and whistles.

I had forgotten about asking for help from St. Anthony until today!

I will bury my faded, paint chipped St. Joseph statue upside down in the ground next to my front door in order to help me sell this house. I will report back!

After reading all your replys I have not once read in any of them where someone prays to Jesus. He is the one who died for you and you are praying to a statue. Joseph did not raise from the dead, only Jesus did. I am sure the Lord God must look down on his people and wonder why they do such things like bury a statue. to sell their home. I prayed to jesus to help us sell our house if it be his will not mine and 3 days later it sold and that happen with the last two huses we owned. and I didn't bury Joseph. I was raised in home who's father was catholic and I know back then the catholics was told not to read their bible for they would not understand it. Well you catholic folks, you better start reading your bibles and learn something for it does not tell you to pray toANY image much less Joseph or even Mary. If its not in the Holy Bible then don't believe anything you hear.

I am a believer, prayer and faith has worked for me! Thank you St Joseph, I will be forever grateful for all you have done for me and my family. God Bless You.

This has worked for us every time we sold a house — but in this economy i want to hold on to my house — is there a tradition for St Joseph to help me keep my home? Please let me know

There is nothing like hope again hope. If the idol had not been used the same results would have eventuated. Remember when we die we are DEAD until the final ressurection. There is no one in heaven to look over us but the one true God.

What am I doing wrong !!! My house has now been on the market for a year and some months- I have been ripped off- folks not doing what they say they will do- over charge for lawn work; my freezer in the shed gone; it is an awesome home- I put $20000 in update- high quality interior, etc a beautiful front and back- I buried St Joe from the start even flew home to make sure he was in the right direction- then had a woman get 2 more St Joes from a priest who blessed them, took them back to the house and buried them and gave alms……HELP

I worked at a model home and placed the St. Joseph in front of the model home sign. I wanted him to bring me buyers for the subdivision. However, we had offer after off on the model home only to have the builder say that they would not sell the model. I tried to dig it up, but could not find it. In the end, a full price offer was made on the house and taken by the builder. I never did find the statue though. I hope that he keeps the new homeowner safe. It works!

After praying the 9 day Novena, we got a contract on our house and sold it. My problem is, the ground was frozen when we moved and we could not dig up the statue. I feel badly about this…what to do?
