Last week we showed you the Top 10 Cities to Live in Worldwide, now we will show you the flip side, the 10 worst cities to live in worldwide as compiled by The Economist magazine. The least liveable city Algiers rated a scale of 64.7% livability. That does not sound like much until it is compared to the top 10 cities which range from number 1 Vancouver at 1.3% to number 10 Zurich at 3.9%.
The factors that go into the what makes a city liveable are traffic congestion, crime, education, infrastructure, access to health care, recreation, and cultural activity.
While the list reads like the itinerary of a Bob Hope and Bing Crosby movie, my guess is these are not cities that I would like to visit. I was talking to a pilot friend who told me about how the airline he flies with is adding service to Lagos. When arriving the crew is escorted under arms to their van which has 2 armed escorts to get the crew to their hotel. Once at the hotel no one is allowed to leave. Kidnapping is such a threat these are the precautions that need to be taken.
The 10 Worst Cities To Live In Worldwide
- Algiers 64.7%
- Dhaka 60.4%
- Lagos 60.1%
- Karachi 58.6%
- Kathmandu 54.7%
- Abidjan 53.9%
- Dakar 53.2%
- Phnom Penh 53.0%
- Tehran 52.6%
- Bogota 48.3%

These cities didn’t even hit the radar on my vacation list, yet alone to LIVE.
Lagos is a decent city to live in. Definitely not close to being the worst. The real estate opportunities there are fantastic. Some areas of the city are very, very expensive. And the prices are going up fast.
Actually, some parts are amongst the most expensive in Africa. And all this not considering the current boom the city is facing, since all the oil company HQs are moving from the unstable oil cities, to Lagos. Imagine renting a decent condo at 100,000$ a year…
What you will have in Lagos: Good restaurant, decent lifestyle, huge business opportunities (besides those fake phone calls you get of course), decent nightlife, and very cosmopolitan city!
The main downside: Security. But this should improve in the coming month, and many people live with it no problem.
Bogota should not even be on this list..
That place is happening big city life… beautiful women.
Dat place is the Shiznit!
Karachi…should be number 1 not 4th…
Dang, we can’t even come first in shitiness!!!
Excluding Baghdad?
hey guys i saw more garbage on the street in london rather than tehran,
i see more crime in london , los angeles and new york, the traffic in new york is more killing , so
what kind of ranking is this??? you better think about sth more realistic
I have never been to any of these places but different living conditions for different people, live where your comfortable.
I am from Melbourne, Australia. The “2nd” best city to live in the world. Well, the past 2 years i have been living in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and i must say that I have seen more violence, serious crimes and vandelism in melbourne in a week than in Phnom Penh these last 2 years… Something to take into account!!!
Could someone out there explain how Dhaka (ranked 2nd in 10 worst places to live) fare in each of the following categories listed such as traffic congestion, crime, education, infrastructure, access to health care, recreation, and cultural activity? just curious to learn some specifics before moving there with a job for the next two years! shall i expect two years of pure hell?? is there a silver lining?
Guys, U left Riyadh??? (Saudi Arabia)
As far as I know London is one of the worst cities to live.
I´m from Ecuador, South America, here we still having a quite of peace. So I think you should specify what kind of live you mean.

I'm surprised that Lagos is 3rd on the list. It should be first. I have never been to Algiers or Dhaka, but I lived most of my life in Lagos and I can tell you it was the worst hellhole you could imagine. The new Lagos State Governor has helped things along quite a bit, but the traffic still has to be seen to be believed.
I had to leave Nigeria after surviving two armed robberies (many of my friends did not survive), and I ain't never going back. Outside of countries that are actively fighting wars, Nigeria has got to be the most dangerous, lawless, and corrupt country there is, and Lagos exemplifies that spirit. I don't deny that there are great opportunities there, but I would rather be alive, thank you.
The fellow who mentioned Lagos in the same breath as good restaurant, decent lifestyle?, decent nightlife, and very cosmopolitan city cannot know the city very well, or is an expat who lived in the "better" parts of town.
hi, all, I'm from Dhaka. I'm gonna tell you some reasons why Dhaka is not worthy enough to hold 2nd position.. yeah there's a huge traffic here.. but others points ( like crime, education, infrastructure, access to health care, recreation, and cultural activity) are not actually true what this report says. I think, there's not any country where crime doesn't prevail. yeah, if you come here in 1st day of bangali new year, you'd see a view of enjoying a day with all..it's a social program where all the people of Dhaka enjoy it a lot ! thank you.
excluding few of the posh areas in this city, Dhaka should be no 1.
even though i am a bangladeshi i think that bangladesh should be no. 1 really its that bad
