One of the key indicators on where people are looking to move, or more accurately dreaming of moving, these days involves internet searches. Realtor.com has come out with it’s results for September and Chicago is leading the way.
So if you are looking to sell your home in one of the top 10 markets you should put a special emphasis on making sure it is listed and showing up in the search engines and on popular search sites such as Realtor.com, Zillow, and Trulia. As an added tip, make sure your agent takes great pictures of your home. Failure to take quality pictures of a home that is in an online search is going to mean very little interest in the home.
So here you go;
Top 10 Most Popular Cities For Real Estate Searches
- Chicago, Illinois
- Detroit, Michigan
- Los Angeles, California
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- Atlanta, Georgia
- Tampa, Florida
- Phoenix, Arizona
- Las Vegas, Nevada
- Dallas, Texas
- Boston, Massachusetts

Good info, I would be very interested in a top 10 list of what things real estate searchers look for when deciding on what city to look at!
I am surprised that Chicago would be listed as number 1. California is low on the list but I can see why what the rising cost of living with taxes and what not.
It looks to me that this list closely reflect the areas of the country where homes have lost the largest percent of value. I would be interested in seeing a side by side comparison of those two lists.
nice input. still these cities are on top.
Thanks for sharing most useful information which is the popular topic for investors. I am also finding this information and now I think that I will buy the properly very easily after reading this post.
I am suprised that Las vegas is ranked as low as 8th. Pricing in a lot of neighborhoods are below what they were 15-20 years ago. High unemployment may be a contributing factor,
Tucson Arizona was recently named by CNN Money as one of the top 25 places to retire and certainly the real estate market is prime for buyers. As a neighboring city to Phoenix, there are many reasons to search for real estate in Tucson not least of which is the spectacular weather and the world-class golf courses!
This website had good information for me. It taught me that you need good quality pictures to help sell your home. I liked how it had the top 10 most popular cities. I am always intrigued on that kind of stuff. But overall it had good information for me to help me when I want to sell my house.
So true about the online presence and the high-quality pics. I just can't figure out why more Realtors don't do this.
Yeah. Online listing of homes are important but without pictures that will help the home buyer visualize the homes included in the listings, it will be useless. actually, virtual tours of homes are getting even popular nowadays, so aside from photos, make sure there is also a virtual tour feature of homes to get the most out of online listings.
I am actually surprised that Detroit made the list.
I definitely agree with the great pictures to post at the Internet. The Internet has become a very big medium for every person who is looking for something to buy, this time, a house. So, it would be a great deal to present the product very well. And wow, Chicago topping the search engines is quite amazing.
I am really surprised to see Detroit on top of that list..
Hey Tom, thanks for sharing such an awesome information for real estate searches.
Your site has given me the idea of how to sell house/property in online process.
Hi,
I want to say thanks to you for your hardwork on this issue. I check all the list. I would love to go for Los Angeles, California. Thanks for sharing all the useful information with me.
Your are the best one whom i needed i am really very impressed with your post can you more share here.
Thanks for sharing..
"mortgage questions 27,100"
Gosh, I'm very surprised that Austin, Tx isn't on that list. The market there seems as hot as it ever was.
Thanks for sharing most useful information which is the popular topic for investors and its really informative with new updates. Thanks alot..
Online searches have become the perfect source of searching something in a hassle free way. they save you time and bring you exactly what you want. This list is really good. Keep sharing. Thanks!
nice blog with good information. i don't know why people don't search about property in India.
THANXS FOR SHARING ,THE POST IS REALLY INTERESTING AND QUITE INFORMATIVE TOO …..
When I sold my home almost two years ago, I found that photos were a must have. This may sound a bit "old school," however, I also found that photos on a flier along with good content writing available in the tube/real estate sign just outside my home really helped as well. I feel quite fortunate that I was able to sell my house within six months. Just put your flier in the Information To Go tube.
I agree with the advice of taking quality pictures of the home you are trying to sell. Make sure your agent takes the time to bring in a professional photographer (if possible). Pictures can often speak a thousand words and will help catch the eye of potential buyers.
Very interesting post. I really did not think Chicago was going to be number 1, definitely a surprise.
Thanks for the post.

Good Information for familes looking to relocate. I agree 100%, good pictures are a must. If your home does not show well online, it decreases you chances of showings. Almost all home searchs start using the internet these days.
I am a Chicago Realtor and while there does seem to be an increase in searches recently it appears to be from bargain hunters. With the large surplus of foreclosed properties on the market currently bids are often well below reduced asking price. I'm afraid this slump is going to continue for quite a while unfortunately.
Thanks for your nice blog posting.
Woo HOO! Las Vegas is #8 and with good reason. We're the biggest metropolis with the best prices in the country. 50 % of our sales are cash investors who are taking advantage of these amazing prices.

The article is really informative and useful.
No wonder that chicago is number one.Very Nice place For me.
Very informative post,it great me the great idea that how to make to sell/buy homes online,You have share the quality pictures which can attract the things…
It's true, many people are moving to L.A. and other parts of Southern California, not surprised to see this as number three on the list. If you own many properties, now's the time to look into using a property management company to help rent them out.
I'm surprised San Diego didn't make the top ten. In Del Mar home sales have doubled in 2011 compared to 2010.
You have provided good information for real estate searchers. Where most people are moving is a parameter to know which place is best for real estate. This is great information.
This is a great post – a invaluable information for people in real estate. This will also help home buyers. Real estate investors will most probably invest in these places. But why is Fort Lauderdale, FL not included in the list?
Fort Lauderdale Homes for Sale are also worth checking.
Interesting post Tom! At present, I am looking for Sherwood homes for sale, in the State of Oregon. This post provided me information on what other areas I can consider. THanks for this post!
I don't really ever consider Las Vegas to be one for real estate! I guess the attraction of getting a casino job! I guess Detroit made the list due to having such a low average property value…
HI Tom! I agree with your tip that says "make sure your agent takes great pictures of your home." A couple of good quality photos of featured homes for sale can help entice a buyer to find out more about the property. It's more interesting than merely reading pure text descriptions only.
Thanks for sharing this post in really nice ..I am suprised that Las vegas is ranked as low as 8th.
Nice post Tom! I agree when you said "Failure to take quality pictures of a home that is in an online search is going to mean very little interest in the home." When I was checking on different Lake Oswego homes for sale posted online, nice quality pictures always catches my attention easily. Of course, I did not skip on personally inspecting the home but I would not have picked my home; if I was not immediately captivated by its photo at first.
Thanks for the information, I think Chicago is in the no. 1 list because it is one of the most populous city in the US. And I thought L.A. was next in the list, because of the population too and just mentioned in the previous comment there are many people moving to this city.
I dig this post! Thank you for the information. Now, im looking for the top reasons that makes each city a good place to invest in real estate.
Great information provided by you thanks for sharing this great post regarding real estate. According to my opinion urban planning and city planning is the important aspect to plan's present and future of city and town.
I agree with your post. Online home searching is popular nowadays and there are many ways an interested home buyer can assess if a certain place for investment and/or for residence. Research is always a key if you want to make your home buying experience right.
Hello,
Thank you so much for your great post. The you have shared with us is really very interesting and informative.
I liked it so much.
Hello Tom,
First of all thanks a lot for sharing information about real estate. Quality pictures of home are really become a important part of online search, because good appearance of home will help you easily to increase the cost online. You have provide detailed information.
High Quality photos and video are a must as we move forward! And…home buyers and sellers want to see a lot of photos too!
I agree with the good quality of photos so that you may attract many first time home buyers. You may also join on several social media sites to promote the real estate you are handling. Thanks for this useful post, I love reading your blogs and I hope you have an update about this topic.
I'm surprised cities near the coast aren't higher up on the list. But it does show the places more sought after by home buyers.
Thanks for the post! Glad to see Philadelphia as number 4.
